Wix, Squarespace, or Custom-Built? What Westchester Business Owners Should Actually Consider

A practical, jargon-free comparison of Wix, Squarespace, and custom-built websites for Westchester business owners.

John Nagle·August 24, 2026

This is the question I get asked more than any other from Westchester business owners: "Can't I just use Wix or Squarespace?" The honest answer is sometimes yes — and sometimes it's the most expensive cheap decision you can make. Here's how to actually think about it.

What Wix and Squarespace Do Well

Both platforms are excellent for launching quickly. They're drag-and-drop, hosted for you, and the monthly cost is low. For a brand-new small business with a simple offering and no real growth ambition, that's a reasonable starting point.

Where They Break Down

The cracks show when your business grows past the template:

  • SEO limits. Both platforms have improved, but they still generate code that's heavier and less semantically clean than a custom build. In competitive Westchester markets, that matters.
  • Design ceiling. You're constrained to what the template allows. A Scarsdale boutique or a Rye restaurant that wants a genuinely distinct brand experience will hit the wall.
  • Performance. Template builders load a lot of scripts you don't need. Slow sites rank lower and convert worse.
  • Ownership. You don't own the platform. When prices change or features move behind a paywall, you have no recourse.

When Custom-Built Is Right

A custom-built site makes sense when your brand, your conversion goals, or your local search strategy genuinely need more than a template can deliver. You get a site engineered for your specific audience, your specific town, and your specific services — with code you own and can extend.

The Real Question

It's not "Wix vs custom." It's "what does my business actually need to grow?" If the answer is "a brochure that exists," a builder is fine. If the answer is "a site that converts Westchester customers and ranks locally," a custom build earns its cost back.
